Joe Biden wins US presidency, says ‘will be a President who seeks to unite, not divide’

In his victory speech, Joe Biden, who clinched the US Presidency after defeating Republican Donald Trump, positioned himself as a leader who would “seek not to divide, but to unite”.

Democrat Joe Biden, who defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States as the voters narrowly pushed him over the finish line, positioned himself as a leader who would “seek not to divide, but to unite” a country reeling under a pandemic and a battered economy.

In his first address to the US as a President-elect, Joe Biden pledged to become a President who “doesn’t see Red and Blue states”, but a United States.

“I sought this office to restore the soul of America,” Joe Biden said and, “to make America respected around the world again and to unite us here at home”.

His victory came after more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed counting of the votes. Joe Biden crossed the winning threshold of 270 Electoral College votes — he needed to clinch the presidency — with a win in Pennsylvania.

According to the CNN projections, Joe Biden has clinched the states of Washington, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Virginia, New Hampshire, Colorado, Oregon, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia, and Vermont.

In his victory speech, Joe Biden also announced that his first work would be to turn around the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. For this, Joe Biden said he would announce a task force on coronavirus on Monday.

“I will spare no effort to turn around this pandemic. This is the time to heal America,” Joe Biden said, adding, “We cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality, or relish life’s most precious moments — hugging a grandchild, birthdays, weddings, graduations, all the moments that matter most to us — until we get this virus under control.”

Joe Biden also spoke to the supporters of Donald Trump “For all those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand the disappointment tonight. Now let’s give each other a chance. It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again,” Joe Biden said.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who joined Joe Biden on the stage after the US election results were announced, introduced the President-elect “as a president for all Americans” who would look to bridge a nation riven with partisanship and nodded to the historic nature of her ascension to the vice presidency.

“Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not simply because they’ve never seen it before,” Kamala Harris said, adding, “You chose hope and unity, decency, science and, yes, truth … you ushered in a new day for America.”

“Protecting our democracy takes struggle, it takes sacrifice but there is joy and progress in it. Because we have the power to build a better future,” Kamala Harris said.

Speaking about her mother Shyamala Gopalan, Harris said that when she had first come to the US, she had not thought about this moment. “I’m grateful to the woman most responsible for my presence her e today, my mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris. When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn’t imagine this moment. But she believed so deeply in America where a moment like this is possible,” Kamala Harris said.

“I am thinking about her,” Kamala Harris said.
